Heart of Glass
1974, 93 min. - Werner Herzog's films are characterized by their willingness to go off the deep end, but Heart Of Glass goes even deeper than usual. During the filming, Herzog hypnotized his actors in order to help convey what the director describes as "an atmosphere of hallucination, of prophecy and of visionary." Set in the pre-industrial past, the story tells of a village that loses the secret of making its unique Ruby glass. The townspeople turn to magic and madness in a desperate effort to recover the pure ingredient they have lost. A mixture of mysticism, apocalyptic grandeur and incredibly photographed visions that begin and end the film make this possibly the most breathtaking film of Herzog's career. Heimat #1
color and b/w, 924 min. on 6 DVDs, German language with English subtitles - Edgar Reitz' HEIMAT is something quite different. It took Reitz five years and four months to complete this semi-autobiographical portrait of his own childhood in this hilly region between Frankfurt and Saarbruecken. The performances are outstanding, indeed, emotionally moving and credible down to the last word and gesture. HEIMAT is the incredible saga of a German Family from the end of World War I to 1982. Heimat #2
In color and black and white, on 13 video cassettes 26 hours, German language with English subtitles - The second section of Edgar Reitz's "film novel" focuses on 10 years (1960 to 1970) in the life of a young classical musician/composer who moves from his small village to Munich. It is a massive sequel of sorts to 1984's Heimat #1, Reitz's 16-hour chronicle of the life in Germany from 1919 to 1982. Although the second Heimat is not a direct continuation of the first Heimat (which roughly translated means "homeland"), its lead character, Hermann Simon (played by Henry Arnold), was featured in the original. Both "Heimats" were shot like theatrical features. The second Heimat had a four year, 552 day shooting schedule, with a cast of 71 major and 310 minor speaking roles and 2,300 extras. Initially shown to record audiences on German TV. Milos Stehlik, director of Facets Video, likens its effect in Germany to that of the 1970's "Roots" in America. Once people get hooked, like a novel, they can't put it down. It has a solid dramatic structure, with characters moving in and out; but it doesn't go overboard like a soap opera. How to Live in the German Federal Republic

I Am My Own Woman
91 min., documentary - Charlotte von Mahlsdorf has lived through the Nazis, domestic violence, East German Communism and the personal pain of anti-gay prejudice. Charlotte von Mahlsdorf (born Lothar Berfelde in 1928) was brought up by her Nazi father who wanted to make her into a proper soldiers. She grew up in Nazi Germany, survived World War II, the East Germany of the Stasis and now the re-united Germany of the skin heads. In this film, Rosa von Praunheim relates the incredible life story of a warmhearted human being who is also a courageous outsider and born fighter. Starring Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, Ichgola Androgyn and Jens Taschner. Please note: Contains male nudity, adults only. N/R. German language with English subtitles.

In a Year of Thirteen Moons
1970, color, ca. 129 min. - One of Fassbinder's most unusual and daring films, In a Year of Thirteen Moons, stars Erwin Spengler as a man desperately in love with his business partner. He decides to have a sex change operation, becomes Elvira, but this fails to attract the love of his beloved. German language with English subtitles.

I Only Want You to Love Me
1976, Unrated, ca. 104 min. - Deprived of parental affection throughout childhood, Peter takes his wife and leaves his small town home and moves to the city. Determined to disprove his father's belief that he will never be able to support a family, Peter lands a job and begins a new life. Soon the strains of work, money and marriage aggravate his anxieties. He becomes a compulsive worker and consumer, slowly falling deeper into debt and despair. Finally, Peter snaps and in a terrifying moment of psychological displacement, commits a senseless murder. Written and Directed by: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The Inheritors
1984, Drama, Not Rated. 89 min.- Director Walter Bannerts critically acclaimed film exposes the terrifying resurgence of new fascist groups who prey on today's youth. On his way home from school, 16-year -old Thomas Feigl (Nikolas Vogel) helps Charley (Roger Schauer), an unemployed teenager, escape from the police. Invisible Adversaries
1977, 112 min. - Set in contemporary Vienna, this controversial film has been called a feminist Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Journey of Hope
ca. 111 min. - A Academy Award-winning movie based on the true story of one man's dream for a better life. Haydar and his wife Meryem are poor Kurdish villagers living with their seven children in Turkey, dreaming of a 'paradise' in Switzerland. Haydar decides to sell his possessions and emigrate illegally to build a better life, and taking his wife and one child, they set off on a journey across the mountains. Haydar and his family are at the mercy of their smugglers, and as the journey progresses, they find that every step they take is more expensive than promised. By the time they reach the Swiss borders, they have lost most of their possessions and all of their money. With nothing but their dream to guide them, they face the most difficult part of their journey, crossing by foot the brutally cold and dangerous Swiss Mountain slopes. Journey of Hope takes you every step of their passage, a perilous adventure towards the promise of a new life - a search for that greater land where every dream you dream comes true.

Kameradschaft
1931, French and English subtitles 92 min., b&w - Directed by G. W. Pabst with Alexander Granach, French and German miners work in their section of a mine located at the border of both countries, bitter towards one another because of the war. But one day an explosion traps the Frenchmen and the German miners come to the rescue. Based on the tragic mining disaster that claimed the lives of fourteen hundred Frenchmen, Kameradschaft is a plea for international coopertion. Kamikaze '89

Robert, despondent over the breakup of his marriage, crashes his VW into a river and swims ashore, where he meets Bruno, a projector repairman who akes a living calling on isolated movie houses that dot the German countryside. Together, the two set off on a funny, warm and unforgettable journey across Germany, listening to rock'n'roll, visiting shuttered movie theaters, encountering strangers with strange tales and discovering what it means to be living in Germany today. Knife In The Head
1978, 108 min. - This gripping psychological thriller stars Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) as Hoffman, a scientist who one night goes searching for his estranged wife. He arrives at the youth center where she works, only to be caught in a police raid on the radicals who hang out there. In the struggle, he is shot in the head. The damage leaves Hoffman partially paralyzed, unable to speak and without memory. He must rebuild his entire personality. Both the police and radicals try to manipulate Hoffman for their own ends, whole he desperately tries to uncover the truth behind this shooting. German language with English subtitles.

Kolberg
1945, color, ca. 118 min., English subtitles - One of the Third Reich's most ambitious spectaculars, three years in the making, mobilized Germany's most talented artists and thousands of extras to recreate the true story of a Prussian town's rebellion against Napoleon's army of occupation. Laced with anti-Christian symbolism and National Socialist ideology, the film is a mirror of Hitler Germany's own war for survival. In its characterization of Kolberg's besieged citizenry, the epic allegorically reflects the spirit of fanatical resolve to fight on that Nazi propaganda was attempting to instill in the German population during the final years of World War 2. The film was directed by Veit Harlan.
