Paracelsus
1943, 100 min., b&w - G. W. Pabst directed this account of the 16th Century Swiss physician and alchemist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, commonly known as Paracelsus. In Basel, Paracelsus battles old-fashioned medical ideas and greedy merchants to combat the plague and improve medicine. When Paracelsus is named head physician of Basel, he orders the city gates to be closed against the plague. The authorities don't approve of his healing methods and seek to arrest him. Starring Matthias Wieman, Werner Kreutzberg and Annelies Reinhold, directed by G. W. Pabst. Discontinued. Out of print.

Drama, 1937, ca. 91 min., b&w - After a German World War I pilot crashes in France, he is taken in by a group of French actors. When an actress falls in love with him she must decide where her loyalties lie. Directed by Karl Ritter, featuring Lida Baarove, Mathias Wieman. Discontinued. Out of print.

Peterle
1943, ca. 80 min., b&w - The wedding plans of a beer truck driver and a formidable widow are put on hold when she discovers that he has a child. A heartwarming melodrama with Joe Stoeckel and Elisa Aulinger. Der Muenchener Bierfahrer Brandlmeier ist in etwas verspaeteter Liebe zu der energischen Witwe Enzinger entbrannt, die eine Tochter hat. Einer Eheschliessung stuende nichts im Wege, wenn nicht ploetzlich die Witwe festgestellt haette, das Brandlmeier ein Kind, naemlich Peterle hat. Tatsaechlich ist es aber gar nicht sein Junge, sonder er gehoert einer ledigen Nichte. die moechte ihr Kind ihrem Braeutigam vorerst noch verheimlichen, bis sie ihm ihre Jugendsuende gebeitet hat. Fuer Brandlmeier wird Peterle jedoch Inhalt seines Lebens, selbst die Witwe Enzinger schliesst ihn in ihr Herz. Als die Mutter Peterle wieder abholt, hat das Leben fuer Brandlmeier seinen Sinn verloren.

Peter Voss, der Millionendieb
1945/1946, ca. 88 min., b&w - Because a bank is facing financial ruin, one of its employees pretends to steal a million dollars from it and then eludes capture by traveling around the World. This popular comedy was one of several German movie versions of this story. Directed by Karl Anton. Featuring Viktor de Kowa, Karl Schoenboeck, and Else von Moellendorff. Discontinued. Out of print.

Punishment Battalion 999
1959, ca. 103 min., b&w, subtitled - On the Eastern Front in World War 2 a German battalion fights Russian soldiers and partisans. But this is no ordinary battalion. These are soldiers being punished by the High Command for "crimes" like ordering retreats to save men's lives or working too hard to discover an anti-gangrene serum. These men are abused by their commanders, made to dig useless trenches under fire, and sent into a final suicidal mission. Their enemies are everywhere. This film is based on a novel by Heinz G. Konsalik and co-written by him. With unflinching realism it portrays these soldiers, their commanders, and the corruptions of the home front. Its Eastern front setting is highly unusual for war films distributed in the US, as is its nightmarish authentically-detailed view of war. Rittmeister Wronski
1954, ca. 98 min., b&w, spy-drama - Based on a true story. A polish nobleman turned agent uses his charm to seduce women and acquire secrets. With Willy Birgel, Elizabeth Flickenschild. Igor von Wronski, Rittmeister der polnischen Armee, hat seinen Abschied nehmen muessen weil sein Gut unter den Hammer geraten ist und weil er seine Schulden nicht bezahlen konnte. Seine Schwester vermittelt ihm einen Job im Spionagedienst. Wronski arbeitet mit skrupellosen Mitteln und sieht sich schon am Ziel seiner Wuensche, doch da bekommt ploetzlich der deutsche Abwehrdienst einen geheimen Tip. Das Netz schliesst sich ueber den Beteiligten des Falles Wronski. Vor dem Volksgerichsthof wird Anklage gegen Wronski und seine Mitspieler erhoben. Wird es eine Zukunft fuer ihn geben? Regie: Ulrich Erfurth. Darsteller: Willy Birgel, Elizabeth Flickenschild.

Der Rebell - Luis Trenker
ca. 92 min., b&w - Trenker stars in this classical historic drama about patriotism and a man's fight for liberty. The year is 1809 and the freedom loving mountain dwellers of Tyrol are banding together to fight Napoleon's troops who have overrun their homeland. A tale of love and sacrifice is enacted here before the backdrop of towering mountains.
Tiroler Freiheitskaempfe 1809. Severin Anderland, der von seinem Studium in Jena zurueckkehrt, lernt unterwegs Erika Riederer kennen. Als er in seinem Tiroler Heimatort ankommt, findet er ihn verwuestet; von Eltern und Schwester fehlt jede Spur. Beim Anblick dreier uniformierter Franzosen verliert er die Nerven und erschiesst einen Offizier. Er flieht in die Berge, wo ihn Erika des oefteren besucht. Severin schliesst sich der Aufstandbewegung der tiroler Bauern an.

ca. 1935, drama, ca. 90 min., b&w - This drama inspired by Gottfried Keller's novella tells of a Bavarian country girl who is suspected of infidelity to her husband, a German-American engineer. Directed by Erich Waschneck; Starring Olga Tschechowa, Luise Ullrich, and Adolf Wohlbruck. Limited Supply.

Die Reiter von Deutsch-Ostafrika
1934, ca. 98 min., b&w - Though friends, a German and a Briton in Africa end up on opposite sides during World War 1. This film was banned by the Nazi Government in 1939 because of its favorable treatment of the English. Directed by Herbert Selpin; featuring Ilse Stobrawa, Sepp Rist, and Peter Voss.

Rembrandt (also known as Ewiger Rembrandt)
1942, b&w, ca. 105 min.) - The 17th Century Dutch artist endures heartbreak and the onslaught of enemies and creditors. This film, shot partially in Amsterdam and the Hague, is notable for its painstaking attention to period detail. Directed by Hans Steinhoff; featuring Ewald Balser, Herta Feiler, and Gisela Uhlen. Limited Supply.

Reitet fuer Deutschland
Drama, 1941, ca. 99 min., b&w - In this biographical film, Baron von Langen is maimed in World War 1 combat and finds his estate in ruins when he returns home. But he is able to overcome these and other obstacles to win an international steeplechase competition. Directed by Arthur Maria Rabenalt; featuring Willy Birgel and Gertrud Eysoldt. Discontinued. Western, ca. 115 min. - 1870: Banditen erbeuten bei einem Zugueberfall ein kostbares Samurai-Schwert, ein Geschenk des japanischen Kaisers an den US-Praesidenten. Der Samurai Kuroda soll das Schwert mit Hilfe des von seinen Kumpanen um seine Beute betrogenen Zugraeubers Link wieder auftreiben. 1939, ca. 115 min., b&w - This late 19th Century doctor fights tuberculosis and champions the germ theory of disease despite the opposition of superstitious provincials, medical, and political bureaucracies, and his wife. Directed by Hans Steinhoff; featuring Emil Jannings and Werner Krauss, and Viktoria von Ballasko.

Romanze in Moll
Drama, 1943, ca. 93 min., b&w - Though unaccredited, the Maupassant's story "Les bijoux" was the inspiration for this poignant drama. In late 19th Century France, the wife of a bookkeeper is blackmailed by her husband's boss after he discovers she is also the mistress of a famous composer. This film has a sensitive delicacy that is unusual for Third Reich cinema. Directed by Helmut Kaeutner and featuring Marianne Hoppe, Paul Dahlke, and Ferdinand Marian. Discontinued. Out of print.

Rosen in Tirol
1940, ca. 102 min., b&w - Conflicts arise between a bird seller and his betrothed because of the dalliances of a king. This musical comedy is based on Carl Zeller's operetta Der Vogelhaendler. Directed by Geza von Bolvary, featuring Marte Harell, Johannes Heesters, and Hans Moser. Discontinued. Out of print.

German language, ca. 70 min., color - One of the most famous German legends tells of Ruebezahl, Lord of the mountains! He lives in the Riesengebirge and punishes bad, greedy people, but always helps the good hardworking poor people. He is especially a friend of the children. This fairy tale movie tells the best and most exciting stories and legends.
